How to use the awareness areas

The playbooks tell you what to do. These areas tell you what to see — the patterns that show up in a congregation long before anyone files a report or asks you for help.

  • Read them before you need them. Nobody learns the signs of grooming or trafficking in the ten minutes after a child says something.
  • Sensitivity is marked — General, Sensitive, and Handle with care. The last group involves someone's safety: read it privately and do not discuss a specific person by name in a group setting.
  • Every area answers three things: what to ask yourself, the signs to watch for, and exactly where to turn — with real numbers, not "seek help."
  • Signs are not proof. They tell you to pay attention and to call the people whose job this is. They never tell you to investigate it yourself.
  • Print the one-pager on any card and hand it to a volunteer, or print the wallet hotline card for everyone who serves.
